Andrew Eddie is the longest serving developer for the Joomla project and is able to provide strategic insight for development projects that can be offered by few other people in the world. As well as coding Joomla 1.6, Andrew also runs a Joomla consultancy NewLifeinIT, The Art of Joomla developer tutorials and blogs and partners with jXtended to offer Joomla extensions. Andrew will be offering insights in to Joomla 1.6, template over-rides, Joomla 2.0 and other technical delights.

Overview

Introducing Developers to Joomla is a short, half-day course that introduces developers to the Joomla framework and extensions.

This session is aimed at people who are already familiar with how to set up a Joomla web site. This session introduces the programmatic concepts behind the Joomla framework and extension development.

Workshop Content

The following topics are covered during the session:

  • An overview of the third-party elements of the Joomla framework
  • An overview of the Joomla developed framework
  • An overview of the extended framework (provided by JXtended) that allows for some measure of forward compatibility with Joomla 1.6
  • A brief introduction to commons developer tools (IDE's and other tools)
  • Planning a Joomla component
  • Database fields that have special significance in the Joomla framework
  • The file structure of a Joomla component
  • A brief introduction to what MVC means to the Joomla developer
  • A detailed look at the administrator list view, and the item edit form
  • A brief introduction into the design of a module

Time permitting (depending on questions), a brief introduction to the Joomla database schema may also be included.
